Overview
Reunion Island boasts breathtaking natural landscapes. In this article, you will discover some of the most stunning sights and hiking routes in its lush green heart.
Exploring Roche Merveilleuse: Nature’s Symphony

I move slowly through the lush forest. With each step, a new sound can be heard: the song of a bird, the buzzing of a mosquito, the crackling of wood under my feet.
Each sound resonates in this place in perfect harmony like a symphony.
I stop to better hear these sounds and sharpen my senses.
Suddenly, a kind of sparrow lands on a tree branch.
I watch it without moving, and it does the same.
It is a common species living here on the Reunion Island. Its bluish head and orange fur give it a unique beauty.
Everyone can observe and listen to their surroundings in their own way.
Disconnect for a moment from the frantic world we live in.
Enjoy the present moment, maybe that’s the key to happiness.
The location
This location named Roche Merveilleuse, is around 10 minutes by car from the center of Cilaos with an easy access by car and free parking.
You will discover a beautiful view on the Cilaos cirque.
In this place there are few easy and flat hikes on short distances that are perfect if you have kids.
I suggest you to take the botanical trail where you will most probably meet local birds if you listen to the forest.
Bridal Veil Waterfall: A Serene Escape in Salazie

I walk along a rocky path with a superb view on the lush vegetation.
In the distance, the sound of a waterfall emerges.
With each step, the sound grows louder.
The Bridal Veil waterfall, about 100 meters long, its powerful flow leaves me in awe.
This volcanic land is home to several magnificent waterfalls, but this one remains a hidden gem, far from mass tourism and crowds.
About the hiking trail
The trail leading to the waterfall is located about 2 mins by car after crossing Salazie city. The start of the trail takes place in a small corner near the main road.
There is no public parking available so I recommend to take the bus from Salazie to the nearest bus stop called « Chateau d’eau ».
Hikers who have a fear of heights should pay attention, as you will need to cross a footbridge to reach the waterfall.
Walk to Belouve lodge

Leaving the village, I walk a few kilometers toward the trail leading to the Belouve lodge.
I can feel the calm and hear the sounds of nature as I move away from the noise of the village.
Suddenly, I enter a majestic forest of giant bamboo, over 10 meters (32 feet) tall. It feels like being in the heart of a jungle with lush vegetation.
After passing through the bamboo forest, the trail becomes steeper as I venture deeper into the rainforest, hoping to sharpen my senses.
About the hiking trail
The trail starts from the village of Hell-Bourg and goes to the Belouve lodge (Gite de Belouve) and it takes approximately 2 hours to reach the lodge.
The trail is quite steep and therefore difficult, but the rich flora and the view at the end are well worth the effort. There is also a picnic area available once you arrive at the lodge.
